Why the Oklahoma final needs more than a yardage comparison

Texas outgained Oklahoma 382–238 in the official game statistics, a 144-yard edge, yet lost by three. Oklahoma scored on a punt return and an interception return. Those two plays accounted for 14 of its 27 points, so offensive yardage alone gives a misleading picture of how the game was decided.

Texas led 17–7 at halftime, was held scoreless in the third quarter, and then tied the game at 24 with 6:32 left after a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Oklahoma's final possession ended in a 47-yard field goal as time expired. The sequence puts the late Texas response and the loss in the same frame: the offense recovered enough to tie, but there was no second chance after the kick.

Our takeaway for the Florida game is to watch possession changes as closely as the total yardage. That is an editorial reading of the Texas Athletics game report and scoring summary, not a claim about what will happen next Saturday.
