A Century of Expansion
The stadium opened in November 1924 with room for 27,000, built as a memorial to Texans who died in the First World War and rededicated in 1948 to include those lost in the Second. It has been enlarged roughly once a generation ever since.
Darrell K Royal's name was added in 1996, while the coach was still alive to see it. His twenty seasons in charge, and the three national championships that came with them, are covered on our Texas football history page. The playing surface carries the names of the program's two Heisman winners, Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams.

Where to Sit
Seating at the Texas football stadium runs north to south, with sideline sections on the east and west sides and large end zone stands at both ends. What you gain in price at the top and the ends, you give up in proximity.
Lower level sideline
Closest to the action along the east and west sidelines. Rows near the front sit below field-surround level after the 1999 lowering, so sightlines improve a few rows up.
Club and premium
Mid-level seating on the west and east sides with indoor access, shorter concession lines and shelter from the weather.
Upper deck
The widest view of the field and the Austin skyline beyond. A long climb, and fully exposed to the sun for early-season kickoffs.
End zones
The most affordable seats in the building and the loudest parts of the stadium. Depth perception on plays at the far end takes some adjusting to.
September kickoffs in Austin are hot. For early-season afternoon games, shade and hydration matter more than the seat number.
Game Day at the Texas Football Stadium
The stadium sits on the east side of the UT campus, within walking distance of downtown Austin. Campus garages including Manor, San Jacinto and Trinity are the closest paid options and open early — for a late-morning kickoff, expect them to be available from around dawn and to fill well before the gates do.

Bag policy
Clear bags up to 12" × 6" × 12" are allowed, plus one-gallon clear storage bags and small clutches up to 4.5" × 6.5". Everything is inspected and all fans pass through metal detectors.
Bevo Blvd
The free pregame street festival on San Jacinto Boulevard runs from about three hours before kickoff until 30 minutes prior. No ticket needed. Bevo's arrival with the band and cheerleaders draws a crowd near the south end.
Arrive early
Allow 60 to 90 minutes before kickoff for parking, security and finding your seat. Gate opening times vary by game — confirm on the official fan guide for your date.

Six figures of burnt orange is the draw. The Eyes of Texas before kickoff and after the final whistle is the moment most first-time visitors remember, with the Hook 'em sign raised across every deck.
The arrival of SEC opponents has raised the ceiling further. Georgia's visit in 2024 drew 105,215 — the largest crowd in the building's history — and fixtures against Alabama, Florida and Ole Miss now bring travelling support that fills whole sections.
